Hurricane Wilma is gaining forward speed early this morning as moves across southern Florida. Wilma’s forward speed is up to 20 mph and even faster movement to 25 mph is anticipated. Landfall occurred at 6:30 a.m. EDT near Cape Romano, Fla. The hurricane has strengthened with maximum sustained winds near 125 mph (Category 3). Winds have gusted over 80 mph with a 3.5-foot storm surge in Key West as the southeastern eyewall approached.

Hurricane Wilma, drifting to the northeast, has emerged completely (the center of circulation) over the southern Gulf of Mexico. Even with Wilma’s center of circulation over the open waters and ever-so-slowly pulling away, the southern half of the hurricane is still rotating in bands of rain and gusty winds. Hurricane Wilma, drifting northward, remains essentially stalled over the Yucatan Peninsula and continues to pound the area with high winds and torrential rains. Meanwhile, hurricane watches have been posted for central and southern Florida. Hurricane warnings are in effect for western Cuba and continue for the eastern half of the Yucatan. Maximum sustained winds in Wilma have dropped to 100 mph and some additional weakening is expected as the storm creeps into the Gulf of Mexico tonight.

The eyewall of Hurricane Wilma has battered Cozumel and the northeastern Yucatan Peninsula including Cancun. Wilma made landfall in Cozumel on Friday afternoon and has now made landfall on the Yucatan Peninsula overnight. The eyewall of intense Hurricane Wilma battered Cozumel on Friday. As of late afternoon, the eye of the storm was over Cozumel giving them a temporary break. Conditions around Cancun will continue to go downhill through the evening. Look for torrential rain, damaging wind, increasing surf and beach erosion. Because Wilma is moving slowly, these conditions will continue well into Saturday.

The northwestern eye wall of Hurricane Wilma has moved over Cozumel and the center could make landfall on the northeastern Yucatan tonight. Wilma continues moving to the northwest slowly at approximately 5mph.

Still extremely dangerous, Hurricane Wilma’s winds have decreased to 150mph, a Category Four. Currently heading for the Yucatan Peninsula, her direction is still uncertain. Weather experts expect her to head for Florida as the week progresses.

Hurricane Wilma has quickly grown from a Category One hurricane to an extremely dangerous Category Five. Packing winds near 175mph, she remains in the Caribbean and is moving slowly west-northwest near 8mph. A turn to the northwest is expected during the next 24 hours. Hurricane force winds extend out up to 15 miles from the center and tropical storm force winds extend out up to 160 miles.

Hurricane Wilma, the 12th hurricane of the 2005 storm season is now packing 75mph winds — a category one hurricane — and is expected to strengthen further today.
Hurricane Wilma is moving toward the northwest near 7mph and this motion is expected to continue for the next 24 hours.
